What’s the Difference?

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE

Working in the food business especially being vegan, I have gotten many questions over the years about the differences between styles of eating and different diets.  Today I will enlighten you to the differences between vegetarian, vegan and plant based.

Vegetarian(Merriam-Webster) Noun- a person who does not eat meat and sometimes-other animal products, especially for moral, religious or health reasons.  Adjective- relating to the exclusion, of meat or other animal products from the diet.  The Vegetarian Society states:

"A vegetarian is someone who lives on a diet of grains, pulses, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, fungi, algae, yeast and/or some other non-animal-based foods (e.g. salt) with, or without, dairy products, honey and/or eggs. A vegetarian does not eat foods that consist of, or have been produced with the aid of products consisting of or created from, any part of the body of a living or dead animal. This includes meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, insects, by-products of slaughter or any food made with processing aids created from these."

The five most common forms of vegetarianism are:

Lacto-ovo vegetarian- eats a vegetarian diet to include eggs and dairy.

Lacto vegetarian- eats a vegetarian diet that includes dairy.

Ovo vegetarian- eats a vegetarian diet that includes eggs.

Pescatarian- eats a vegetarian diet that includes fish or anything from the ocean.

Vegan does not eat dairy, eggs or any animal products.

Vegan- (Merriam-Webster) Noun- a person who does not eat meat or use animal products.  “I am a strict vegan.” Adjective- using or containing no animal products. “A vegan diet.”  The Vegan Society states: Veganism is a way of living, which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.  Veganism is more than a diet, it’s a lifestyle based off a set of principles that vegans hold dear.  All forms of exploitation would also include clothing, shoes, haircare and beauty products, cosmetics and anything made from materials that comes from animals or tested on animals.

Whole Food Plant Based Diet(WFPBD)- According to the forks over knives website, It's a diet based on fruits, vegetables, tubers, whole grains, and legumes; and it excludes or minimizes meat (including chicken and fish), dairy products, and eggs, as well as highly refined foods like bleached flour, refined sugar, and oil.  It is a little adjustable but dead set on its focus on eating whole foods.  This style of eating does not restrict clothing, shoes or materials such as leather from being used or worn.

As you can see, there are many similarities between all of these diets and styles of eating.  I hope I was able to clarify them a little better for you.
